Jonah Hill Plays a Nerd Who's Suddenly Cool in '21 Jump Street'

Jonah Hill has quickly become one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents, due in part to his dynamic evolution from laugh-out-loud comedy star to Golden Globe, SAG, and Academy Award® nominee for Best Supporting Actor in 2011 for his role in Moneyball, in which he starred opposite Brad Pitt.

Now, he makes a successful return to the comedy genre with Columbia Pictures' "21 Jump Street," an R-13-rated movie that took Hollywood box office by storm.

In the film, Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department's secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover...in high school!

Jonah Hill's character, Schmidt, is a onetime nerd who finds himself suddenly cool for the first time in his life. "It's one of the more interesting characters I've played," says the actor. "He just wants to be a good cop, but he has insecurities that date all the way back to high school. When he gets sent back to high school, undercover, he gets drunk with power, forgets about police work, forgets about his friendship with Jenko. He likes living this fake high school life – better than the life he has as a guy in his mid-20s." So in essence it's the story of a guy who gets lost in his moment in the sun.

Hill, who's also credited as executive producer of "21 Jump Street," says that the film started with a simple question: "What would it be like to relieve the most important time period of your youth... high school. You think you have all the answers that you didn't have then, but then you get back there and realize those answers are all wrong. You then immediately revert back to the insecurities and problems you had when you were seventeen."

Hill wrote the story with Michael Bacall, who wrote the screenplay. "At first, nothing goes as planned for the characters. These guys treat it like wish fulfillment – 'Oh, if I only knew then what I know now,'" Bacall explains. "But all of the information that they have no longer applies. Jenko – who was always the cool kid back then – falls in with the nerds, and Schmidt – the nerdier of the two – falls in with the cool crowd. It's a total role reversal."

According to Hill, the fact that the show has been off the air for a generation worked to their advantage in devising the story and the tone. "I'll meet teenagers and I'll ask them if they know the series – they don't," he says. "So I tell them it's about young-looking cops who go undercover in a high school, and they say, 'That sounds awesome.' It's such a great premise for an action-comedy."

Opening across the Philippines on May 9, "21 Jump Street" will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Eva Green, A Vengeful Witch in 'Dark Shadows'

Eva Green ("Kingdom of Heaven," "Casino Royale") stars as Angelique Bouchard, a witch who knows how to hold a grudge, in Warner Bros.' new black comedy "Dark Shadows."

In the film, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), an 18th-century lothario, breaks the heart of a heartless witch by the name of Angelique. When Barnabas declares his love for another, the ethereal Josette (Bella Heathcote), Angelique exacts her revenge on both of them: taking Josette's life while giving Barnabas an eternal one as a vampire. It's not much of a life, however, as she proceeds to bury him in a coffin forever…or at least the foreseeable future.

"Director Tim Burton kept asking, 'What if there was this tremendous fight brewing between this man and woman, who each have supernatural abilities, for 200 years?'" screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith remembers. "And that's basically what we see towards the end of the film, the tension that has been brewing for the entire movie—sexual tension, financial tension, physical pure hatred of each other. I mean, after all she did lock Barnabas in a box for two centuries!"

"Angelique's our villain," producer Graham King says. "She just wants Barnabas at any cost and has the power to do that, so it's a fantastic role for Eva Green to get her teeth into and she's amazing."

"Everything is magnified with her—her pain, her desire, her vengeance," Green remarks. "It's such an outrageous character, but I don't see her as necessarily evil. Her heart was broken, and when Barnabas re-emerges, it's overwhelming for Angelique. She's at the height of her power and yet she's very vulnerable because Barnabas is her weak point. She's convinced he loves her as much as she loves him, but he won't admit it. She wants to own him, to possess every bit of him."

"Eva was the first person that came to my mind for Angelique," Burton offers. "I was so happy to have her in the role because she ended up bringing much more to it than even I imagined. She had great ideas, was real fun to work with and surprised me every day."

"I've always been a fan of Tim's," Green says. "He's so creative, but also open to suggestions, which is wonderful for an actor. We had the same understanding of Angelique's character. He never treated her like a one-dimensional villain; he got her pain."
Angelique is a woman who has changed with the times. During the 18th century, Angelique was a dark-haired servant girl. As Angie, the CEO of Angel Bay, she's a successful blonde businesswoman. "Tim wanted her to look like the American dream," says Green. "Everything about her is perfect. Too perfect. Perfect makeup, red lips, platinum hair. She's very glamorous yet sophisticated. But, little by little, from the moment Barnabas escapes from his tomb, her facade starts to crack."

Opening across the Philippines on May 10, "Dark Shadows" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

3rd 'Men in Black' Journeys Back to the Past

It has been ten years since the Men in Black were last seen protecting the Earth from the scum of the universe, and since then, there has been rampant speculation about a third film. But Will Smith says that it was always a given that there would be a third film. "We came to a point where we all felt that we had a fresh and compelling story that took the audience to a time and place they had not seen in this franchise," says Smith.

In Columbia Pictures' highly anticipated action adventure comedy "Men in Black 3," Agents J (Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back... in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K's life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him -- secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

The story of "Men In Black 3" takes the filmmakers back – back to the characters' origins, back to the key moments of their relationship, to focus on the key elements that have kept them at arms' length from each other for 15 years – and looked for ways to resolve the conflict. The answer came in sending Agent J back – back in time.

"We wanted the movie to be both familiar and different," says Barry Sonnenfeld, who has taken the helm of all three "Men in Black" films. "What's familiar is the characters and premise of the Men in Black and who they are. We wanted to bring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones back together again. But we also wanted something new and inventive, and that came in the time travel element."

"At the beginning of the movie, J and K are still partners – but they haven't learned much about each other in all their time together," says producer Walter F. Parkes. "In fact, at the very beginning of the story, the character of Zed has recently died and K gives a eulogy that provides no information whatsoever about him. This despite the fact that Zed was supposedly his best friend for 45 years. It makes J think, after all these years, what do I really know about the guy sitting next to me? That is the foundation for our story, and it coincides with the escape of an alien, Boris the Animal, that K put away 40 years earlier, in 1969 – and he's coming back for some kind of payback on K."

Some kind of payback, indeed: Boris jumps back in time to 1969 and kills K. No one in 2012 has any memory that K wasn't murdered 40 years earlier – no one except J, who is wondering what happened to his partner. To save K, J follows Boris back into the past – and as he does, he sees an opportunity to learn more about his partner. "J sees saving K as a great opportunity to learn secrets about K – he thinks he'll find out why K is so grumpy and reserved," says Sonnenfeld. "But as it turns out, the young Agent K is open, friendly, and interesting."

Of course, even as the movie explores the characters' relationships, it isn't a heavy drama. It's Men In Black, and that meant it would deliver trippy Rick Baker aliens, cool gadgets, and big laughs. All of that adds up to an irresistible tone that isn't quite like any other film. Sonnenfeld says that the key to the tone – the only way to make the movie really funny – is for everyone to play it entirely straight. "I want the situations to be funny, but the performances to be real, so I don't want the actors trying to be funny," he explains. "I don't want the composer to think 'comedy,' because then the music will be comedy music. I don't even want the cinematographer or the lab that develops the film to think it's a comedy, because the next thing I know, it'll look too bright. If I can surround the absurd situation with something real, it'll be a great comedy."

Opening across the Philippines on May 23 in 3D and regular theaters, "Men in Black 3" will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Meet the Stars of "Marvel's The Avengers"

As "Marvel's The Avengers" gears up for its grand opening in the Philippines on April 25, the cast discuss their characters' motivations and how these shaped the film's gripping storyline.

Marvel Studios presents, in association with Paramount Pictures, "Marvel's The Avengers" – the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man: "Tony Stark is open to all possibilities and has no problem accepting extraordinary happenings. Joining The Avenger team is an act of curiosity – he wants to see what's happening firsthand. He realized a while ago that he's not an island, and this time around, he's beginning to understand that it's about a group mindset and that `we' is better than `I.'"

Chris Evans on Captain America: "Big parts of Steve Rogers are his good nature, high morals and strong values. Those morals and values were created in a time when people treated each other differently. The level of interaction was a bit deeper. Everything feels one step apart with all of the technology we have now. A lot of the things that he believed in, stood for and loved have changed. They're not gone—they're just different. He's trying to find his footing in a modern world."

Chris Hemsworth on Thor: "Thor has more of a personal investment in what's happening than the other Super Heroes because the villain, Loki, is his brother. The bigger conflict for him is that he's trying to protect the greater good, but he has some deep questions about what is going on with his brother."

Mark Ruffalo on The Hulk: "This Hulk is mercurial. He's very unpredictable; he's nuanced. There's a sense of humor there; there's an ability to communicate. But he's bristly and he's incredibly dangerous, like a wild animal. His rage feels real; his reactions to things feel human."

Jeremy Renner of Hawkeye: "Hawkeye is alone in the game, an outcast and a loner; he's a lone wolf sort of character, so he's not a team player, but will be there if needed."

Scarlett Johansson on Black Widow: "Black Widow is all business. She's sort of in a grey area. In a sense she's been fighting the good fight, despite her dark background. But she's committed because she has to be and her moral ground is more dutiful. She's militaristic in that way; that's how she knows right from wrong."

Tom Hiddleson on Loki: "Loki's villainy is motivated by the fact that he's damaged and searching for his place in the universe, but in this film he's a lot more menacing and a lot more powerful. He's much more self-possessed. He's also a god, so he's more powerful than any human."

Samuel L. Jackson on Nick Fury: "Nick Fury monitors a lot of things and when he sees a need he generally goes against the grain; he rubs a lot of people the wrong way by taking actions in situations that they don't necessarily want him to take action in but he does anyway."

Cobie Smulders on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill: "Maria Hill and Nick Fury butt heads constantly. I think that Maria is a little bit more intuitive than Nick. But throughout the course of the film, she realizes that he is involved and he does care, and he is taking the right steps to protect our country and fight the bad guys."

Clark Gregg on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson: "When you look at the team, it's made up of rock stars and divas with giant muscles and super-powered egos, so somebody has the job backstage to make them all play in the same super band—and that's what Agent Coulson does.

(Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when "Marvel's The Avengers" assemble in the Philippines on April 25 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Marvel's "Spider-Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" animated series are now aired over ABS CBN, comprising an hour of early programming on Sunday mornings from 8:30-9:30am. ABS-CBN previously aired Marvel's "The Avengers" and "X-Men" animated series.)

'21 Jump Street' Holds Sneak Previews on April 23 and 24

The breakout comedy of the year "21 Jump Street" from Columbia Pictures will have special sneak previews in selected theaters everywhere on Monday and Tuesday, April 23 & 24.

Starring the hilariously dysfunctional duo of Jonah Hill ("Moneyball") and Channing Tatum ("The Vow," "G.I. Joe"), "21 Jump Street" is the big screen re-imagining of the iconic '90s detective TV series which famously launched the career of superstar Johnny Depp.

In the action-comedy, Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department's secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover.

Trouble is, teenagers today are nothing like what they were just a few years ago, and Schmidt and Jenko discover that everything they think they know about being a teenager, from sex to drugs to rock and roll, is all wrong. More importantly, they both find they are still dealing with all of the adolescent problems they didn't address in their own teen years - and both will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.

Opening across the Philippines on May 9, "21 Jump Street" will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Zac, Taylor Talk About their Love Scenes in 'The Lucky One'

Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, stars of Warner Bros.' new romantic drama "The Lucky One" discuss their sizzing love scenes, among other things, in the big-screen adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks bestseller.
In the film, U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault (Efron) returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq, with the one thing he credits with keeping him alive—a photograph he found of a woman he doesn't even know. Discovering her name is Beth (Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. Despite her initial mistrust and the complications in her life, a romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm.
Q: Taylor, can you talk about the love story aspect of the film. Was it more challenging to play the emotional aspects or the physical aspects of the love scenes, which I imagine were carefully choreographed?
Taylor Schilling: Well, for me they're completely different. And I would say, I spent a little bit more time in preparation for her emotional journey and the experiences that Beth was having with Logan and how that was relating to the rest of her life.
It's interesting. It really did take more space for me to kind of uncover where she was coming from and where she was going and how this man was opening her up to true love finally after being so guarded for so long and having given up. The love scenes were a really natural outgrowth of where she was at that point in her story. And the physicality of it was pretty simple. Zac and I were really close at that point. We'd been working together and I really trusted him. And he's a class act. So, it was really fun and comfortable.
Zac Efron: Yeah, it was. I mean, in the scene, they are out of practice. And they're totally in love and having fun and sort of doing it again for the first time. And I think that was easy to do. That's sort of how we were in the moment anyway. So, a lot of that fit.
Q: There's a scene where you say, 'You deserve to be kissed every day.' How easy is it to embrace the romantic genre?
Schilling: I think that, as a woman, those are pretty amazing words to hear.
Efron: Yeah, I'm amazed sometimes at the things that I say that in the moment that just sound great. And then if you put those on paper, they would probably be the cheesiest things in the entire world. In the moment, that's love. Everything's sort of heightened.
Q: Zac, what scene was the most difficult for you as an actor?
Efron: I think the hardest scenes stuff to film, by far, were all the scenes in Afghanistan at the very beginning. Just wearing that equipment, all the tactical stuff, and clearing that room was really challenging. And it was the middle of the night. It was like 3:00 in the morning. It was freezing. There was rubble everywhere, people screaming. Really, really talented actors all around us, and I was controlling a whole unit of Marines, real Marines. And my stress was through the roof. I really wanted this part to be authentic. So, that was the hardest part for me.
Q: Taylor, can you talk about what it's like for your character to live up to expectations that Logan has from carrying Beth's picture around all this time? You want her feet on the ground.
Schilling: Absolutely. Well, there was so much freedom in the fact that Beth had no idea that she was this angel to Logan. So, as an actor and as a character, I was totally freed from trying to be a perfect woman for him, or some kind of an angel. In fact, I think she was probably veering to the other edge of that, of making it more difficult for him, because she was feeling so guarded. Yet that would be paralyzing, I think. I probably wouldn't respond well to that.
Q: Does it help you create a character when you've got a book? I mean, certainly in this case you've got Nicholas Sparks' original novel as well as the script. Do you go to them or do you make the script your universe?
Efron: I think it's somewhere in between. There are specific moments that come out of the book and out of the writing that are really an examination into a character's thought process and what's going on that are very fun to read, and offer all kinds of different explanations and little things that you can think about during the scene. But, also, you have to look in the context of the script. You can't have all kinds of wild other things coming in.
Schilling: Yeah, I agree with that. I think for me it's a little bit more based on the script and just what's happening and gathering all the information you can, and then kind of letting it go and just being present with another actor. That seems to be right now what works for me.
Q: When you're portraying such a pure love story like this, do you just get carried away with the ideal of true love finding a way, or do you feel a responsibility to ground it in reality?
Schilling: Well, I hope that people can relate to it a little bit, or at least maybe that no matter what has been going on in their life or what their relationship is like or where they feel they are, that there is that potential for true love or romance available, no matter where you are in your life or what's happened.
Opening across the Philippines on Thursday, April 19, "The Lucky One" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

'Titanic: The Aftermath' Premieres on Discovery Channel

The Titanic’s sinking was the greatest civilian disaster ever, claiming the lives of two-thirds of those on board, and for the families of its victims the impact of the catastrophe resonated down the generations. Titanic: The Aftermath follows the descendants of three people involved in the sinking as they each explore the fate of their forbears and what happened next.

Jock Hume died playing the violin he loved. His grandson, Christopher Ward, travels to Scotland and to Nova Scotia to find out more. John Jacob Astor was the richest man on the ship. His young wife Madeleine survived and their granddaughter, Jackie Astor Drexel, follows their story. In 1912, John Barnstead was Halifax’s registrar for deaths. Now, his descendent, also named John Barnstead, finds out how John Barnstead Senior created a model for future disasters involving mass loss of life. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s ill-fated maiden voyage, TITANIC: THE AFTERMATH premieres on Discovery Channel on Sunday, April 15 at 9:00 pm with encores on Monday, April 16 at midnight (12:00 am), 8:00 am and 2:00 pm and Saturday, April 21 at 11:00 am.

Discover how the disaster changed forever the families left behind by those who died, and how it impacted those left to deal with the aftermath. Combining archive footage with vivid dramatizations, the programme draws together the powerful human stories that unfolded in the hours, weeks and decades following the sinking. A compelling tale of corporate callousness and cover-up, heroism and medical innovation, as well as class prejudice and social divide, this is a story with powerful contemporary parallels in today’s world.

The three central characters are all men directly involved in the disaster. Two of them came from opposite sides of the class divide, but died together as the ship sank. They would both leave posthumously born children who would thereafter wear the scars of the disaster. The third would be the man responsible for identifying the victims after death, and whose pioneering forensic work, undertaken under the relentless prying gaze of the world’s media, would define how victims of disasters were treated for years to come. The three men are:

· Scottish violinist Jock Hume of the Titanic band, who heroically played until the end only to have his family scandalously treated by White Star Line after his death.

· Passenger JJ Astor, the richest man on the ship, whose wife and unborn son survived the disaster, only to be ostracised by Astor’s aristocratic family.

· Coroner JH Barnstead, who set up a remarkable and influential system for examining and identifying the victims as they were returned to Halifax.

A powerful and moving documentary recounting an unknown aspect of the Titanic story, TITANIC: THE AFTERMATH provides a gripping account of how families of the Titanic victims found out the truth about what had happened to their loved ones, and how their lives would never be the same again after the sinking.

HISTORY Sheds Light as to How the Titanic Sank

As the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s sinking approaches, a team of scientists, engineers, archaeologists and imaging experts have joined forces to answer one of the most haunting questions surrounding the legendary disaster: Just how did the “unsinkable” ship break apart and plunge into the icy waters of the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912?

Titanic: Mystery Solved, premiering Sunday, April 15 at 8pm on HISTORY, will document this most recent mission, unveiling astonishing pieces of never-before-seen wreckage and presenting the expedition’s unexpected findings as well as definitive answers.

In 2010, HISTORY joined the world’s top underwater experts in this most recent expedition to the wreck site, one that completed the most thorough and exhaustive study of the wreck ever made. The undertaking, which included the leadership participation of RMS Titanic, Inc., the salvor in possession of the wreck site, yielded unprecedented new discoveries and the first comprehensive map of Titanic’s watery grave – the entire fifteen square-mile patch of ocean floor where Titanic came to rest – helping to solve the century-old puzzle of what went wrong and to determine who or what was responsible.

Titanic: Mystery Solved tells the exclusive story of this expedition. In addition to the mapping of the entire site, the special will also reveal for the first time the complete picture of the breakup and sinking by use of a virtual hangar. Applying the techniques of a space shuttle or aircraft accident investigation (mapping the site and reassembling the pieces in a hangar), the team of experts will create a virtual holographic reconstruction of the wreck site in a hangar. No other anniversary show has the exclusive story of this unique expedition and its startling revelations.

In the twenty-five years since the wreck was located, no one has ever explored and mapped the entire site – none has had all the keys to understanding what could have truly happened on that fateful night – as nearly half the area remained unseen and unknown, and significant portions of the ship, which could reveal how it broke, were missing.

Now, after 100 years, every inch of the entire site is finally known, and every piece of the ship documented exactly where it landed on the ocean floor a century ago.

In TITANIC: MYSTERY SOLVED, viewers see newly discovered pieces of the ship for the first time, follow the expedition’s new finds, and will come to learn the definitive story of how the ship broke apart. The event special will answer the biggest questions about Titanic: did she have a fatal flaw, and if so, who or what was responsible? By the end of TITANIC: MYSTERY SOLVED viewers will finally know the whole story, finally laying the Titanic to rest.

“The story of the sinking of the Titanic has an enduring fascination for millions of people around the world, and hence it led to one of the most successful movies of all time. The trouble is that movie has defined the history of the event for many people. What we wanted to do was to revisit this tragedy from a scientific point of view and really discover the truth about what must have happened on the night of April 14/15, 1912. TITANIC: Mystery Solved is the most definitive account to date of how the Titanic sank, and will stand out from all the other programmes being made to commemorate the anniversary,” shared Louis Boswell, General Manager, AETN All Asia Networks.

While other anniversary programs tout best-guess theories and land-based speculation, TITANIC: MYSTERY SOLVED presents new findings based on real-world hard evidence gathered on-site to deconstruct the disaster and show exactly how the ship broke apart. From this analysis, we’ll find out who or what was at fault and who or what has been blamed unfairly.

This will be the definitive story of the tragic sinking of Titanic.
